The N286 is a single-board computer based around the 80286. It contains onboard serial and parallel ports, configurable through the BIOS as COM1-4 and LPT1-3. It provides a 16-bit ISA bus, configurable to run at 10 MHz, 6 MHz or 3MHz (for the N286S/10 model.) The bus speed can be changed through the BIOS setup.

BIOS

During POST, pressing Alt + Ctrl + S will enter the BIOS setup. This key combination still works up until an OS has started booting, which means it can be pressed even after an attempted boot that has resulted in an "invalid system disk" message.

E4 Speaker Short pins 3-4 with a jumper to enable the onboard speaker. An external speaker can be connected to either pins 1 and 4 (for a four-pin connector, onboard speaker remains silent), or pins 3 and 4 (for a two-pin connector, onboard speaker also sounds.) Note that the speaker is also accessible through J5. Polarity is not important, however pin 4 is positive/+/red and pins 1/3 are negative/-/black.

J5 pin Purpose Details
1 Reset+ Reset switch + (short to pin 2 to cause system reset)
2 GND Common ground for keyboard and switches
3 Unknown Not an LED (not enough current provided), seems to be a switch like pin 1 (also pulled high to +5V like pin 1). Nothing happens when shorting to GND. System speed does not change, so not a turbo switch.
4 Keyboard clock Connects to DIN pin 1 / mini-DIN pin 5
5 Keyboard data Connects to DIN pin 2 / mini-DIN pin 1
6 Keylock+ Connect to GND (pin 2) to disable the keyboard. Leave floating to enable the keyboard.
7 +5 VDC Keyboard power for DIN pin 5 / mini-DIN pin 4. Also equivalent to E4 pin 4 (Speaker+).
8 Speaker- Equivalent to E4 pin 1 (Speaker-). Connect an external speaker to pins 7-8 as an alternative to using E4.
